Stumbleine is one of my favourite electronic music producers. “Hold On” is yet another soothing, emotional journey which is perfect for this time of the year as we all reflect upon 2013.

It has been a truly enlightening year for me, filled with contrasting emotions and life-changing decisions. Forgettable yet unforgettable at times, 2013 has been a story of heartbreak and illumination.

I hope that 2014 is a year filled with adventure, discovery and love for everyone.

It was the end of a bottle of white wine. The summer breeze was blowing her wild hair into a frenzy. It whipped her face, causing her azure eyes to water slightly. I couldn’t help but smile. I reached out for her loose hand, which was resting on the table. But to no avail, as my hand passed through thin air. The hand had disappeared, the arm slowly faded away and suddenly the image of her was gone. I was staring at nothing, an empty space which used to be filled with immense beauty.

The mirage had ended.

This song was playing in my mind, uninterrupted by madness.

Slowly drifting in and out of consciousness, this song suddenly draws my focus. Words are hard to come by at this late hour, the dead of night enclosing my mind. Described as “phenomenal”, I was immediately taken by the vocals, the haunting overtones transformed into something close to perfection by the drop. It is on replay now, every listen merely overpowering the next. I become obsessed easily, and BROODS, you are my new obsession.

When the light finally stretches its limbs around me
I feel the warmth on my face,
And the pallid façade fades

As the music slowly seeps from my speakers
I’m calm again. It is me again. The one I’ve lost,
To the impervious darkness

My questionable faith was tested
I lacked desire to pursue, to maintain
Dreams, love and beauty

The soothing guitar, the beat of the kick drum
Brings me back from despair, forces me to find an answer
For why I have lost so much,
And gained so very little

I have been seeking a quality remix of Daughter’s haunting “Smother” for an age and Duncan Murray finally seems to have got it spot on. A feel-good summery beat infused with the rather depressing lyrics may rid the original of its resonance, but Murray has created a relaxing experience, which is far more pleasing on the ears than one might think.
